As we mentioned a couple months back, unfortunate ethnic stereotypes can suddenly make classic movies a lot less desirable.
Brooklyn Bridge Park, which runs a delightful summer film series, has come under fire from Asian American groups because of the inclusion of Breakfast at Tiffany's as part of this year's roster of films. You can read a little more about it in today's New York Post.
While we here at Film Gab certainly agree that Mickey Rooney's bumbling and lisping performance as Mr. Yunioshi is as offensive as it is unfunny, the greater shame would be in censoring what is otherwise a splendid film, full of Blake Edwards' deft comedy and Audrey Hepburn's magical screen presence. Let's hope that this skirmish of words develops into an opportunity for discussion rather than a brawl.
